Two years ago I left the gynecologist's office in tears. Being diagnosed with Vulvodynia seemed like a death sentence. My gynecologist said there was nothing she could do. She couldn't even think of anyone to refer me to because she has had several conversations with her peers, but no one knew what to do. I went home and lay on the couch for 5 days with an ice pack. I was so swollen and inflamed that I had trouble walking, sitting, and urinating.
After a few days of denial, I started piecing together my medical history together and decided that I finally had the correct diagnosis. My problems began in my 20s, but in my late 40s became constant and unbearable. I know I have had several yeast infections and bouts of bacterial vaginosis through the years. But as I thought back, I can't tell you how many times I heard a doctor (and I went to several) say “You look fine internally, but you are irritated externally. So I'll write you a prescription to treat a yeast infection (or bacterial vaginosis) just in case”. My guess is that I was misdiagnosed. I never knew why the cures often made my problems worse. No one ever mentioned Vulvodynia.
Instead of wallowing in self pity, I decided I needed to be my own medical advocate and learn more about my condition. Thank God for the Internet. After reading about different approaches, I decided to try the plan laid out in the Vulvodynia Treatment Guide because it seemed the most comprehensive. I followed it religiously – low oxalate diet, recommended vitamins, Estrace and Calendula creams, white cotton panties, soap flakes – everything. I took more yoga classes and asked my husband to be supportive.
Of course I wanted it to work overnight, but slowly the symptoms started to fade. I highlighted every section in the guide encouraging me not to despair, that I would get better. It became my mantra. Within 6 weeks, I felt so much better that I started exercising again. About a month later, my husband and I were having sex again. It was a miracle. I shared my success with my doctor and she has passed it on to her peers and also her other patients with Vulvodynia, so they can have hope.
As long as I follow the plan, I feel great. Unfortunately, last week was very stressful as we lost a loved one. Three days of sitting, stressing, and eating incorrectly took its toll. Even though I know chocolate is a trigger food for me, for some reason I convinced myself that eating a chocolate chip cookie would make me feel better. It didn't, and I am paying the price this week. But, I am back on the plan and know confidently that I'll be back to normal in a few weeks.
I recently turned 49, and I have decided that I want to be fit, fun and fabulous by 50. Now I am not an extravagant person, but I decided that I deserved to spend a little money on me. I had a makeover and went to a bra fitting specialist. I've hired a nutritionist/personal trainer to help me loose weight and tone up while maintaining a low oxalate diet. I even hired a clothing consultant to help me figure out how to make stretchy, pull-on pants look fashionable.
I doubt I will ever go back to wearing fitted pants or bike riding, but when I look at all that I have gotten back by following the Vulvodynia Treatment Guide, I realize that making the small life changes have been worth it. It has given me my life back. Thanks a million! A very touching testimonial from Sarah in Alabama
